Chapter Forty-Three: The Brighter the Surface, the Darker the Shadows Behind
As soon as Sadako heard Shadow Muyang’s words, she immediately realized that Shadow Muyang knew she was conversing with Muyang. Whether he had heard the actual words remained uncertain, though it was highly likely he had.
“No need to guess. All those curses you uttered to the primary personality—I heard them all. My memories are identical to his. Unless he deliberately shuts me out, I will always know. Don’t blame anyone else; even the primary personality himself is unaware of this,” Shadow Muyang said.
“Understood,” Sadako nodded.
“I won’t punish you, but you must promise me this: if the primary personality is about to stray into darkness, you must pull him back. He’s far too kind—too gentle towards any being he acknowledges. He once felt deep disappointment in a friend he cherished, fell into despondency for a time, then recovered. But that recovery was only superficial; at the slightest touch, it could shatter.
If I am one who dwells in darkness yet yearns for light, then the primary personality stands in the light, his heart still seeking brightness. Yet if his wounds break open, he will embrace the darkness and plunge into the abyss,” Shadow Muyang continued.
“Is it really that serious?” Sadako asked, perplexed—after all, the Muyang she had just seen was hard to imagine succumbing to such a fate.
Shadow Muyang glanced at her, seeming to guess what was on her mind. He said nothing, merely pressed his forefinger to Sadako’s forehead.
Sadako felt a sudden dizziness. When she came to herself, she was standing amidst a wasteland.
“This is the realm of thoughts belonging to the primary personality and myself. Originally, I played the villain here, attacking the kingdom the primary personality had created. I used to think that if I could destroy that kingdom, even if I couldn’t fully control this body, I could at least seize some initiative.
But I was wrong—terribly wrong. That kingdom appeared splendid and beautiful, but its filth emerged only when it was destroyed. On the surface, the primary personality wielded absolute power within his kingdom, but he was bound by countless chains, with no one to help, no one to witness his plight.
When I shattered the kingdom, those chains broke, and the primary personality dissolved into dust, drifting into the bodies of everyone present. While I was still reveling in my newfound control, the world changed. All the inhabitants of the kingdom turned into beggars; the gorgeous streets transformed in an instant into a filthy, chaotic slum.
The beggars launched a desperate assault against me, using every ounce of their strength. I nearly died then. When I finally escaped, barely having time to rejoice, I witnessed another transformation.
The primary personality now lay in a crystal coffin, each breath he took siphoning away the lives of many.
Chaotic and confusing, isn’t it? Yet this is the shadowed side of the primary personality’s heart. The kind side is the kingdom I destroyed—locked away in his own world, unseen and unvisited,” Shadow Muyang explained.
Sadako looked around, about to speak, when a dense sound of footsteps echoed nearby.
“Quick! If we’re caught here, there’s no hope for revival,” Shadow Muyang said, grabbing Sadako’s hand and pulling her into a corner.
Then, once again, Shadow Muyang pressed his forefinger to Sadako’s forehead, and they left the realm of thoughts.
“The brighter a person appears on the surface, the deeper the darkness behind them. Some may never reveal it in their lifetime, but if it is ever exposed, it becomes an entirely different scene…”
