Chapter Fifty-Four: The Assassin
Including the driver, everything that happened today had been meticulously planned in advance, so installing a bomb in the car was as easy as turning a hand. There was no time to say more to Liu Hai; Xiao Ye ran toward the vehicle like a madman.
“Get out of the car, get out!”
Liu Hai lay on the ground, gasping for breath. The bomb in the car was set to trigger after a thirty-second delay, originally intended to give the driver a chance to escape in case of emergencies. Unexpectedly, it granted Xiao Ye and his companion a window to flee.
Members of the hidden weapons squad, who had been lying in wait, quickly gathered beside Liu Hai, attempting to help him up.
“Don’t move, it’s broken,”
He hissed in pain as his wound was touched. To avoid the aftermath of the explosion, the squad lifted Liu Hai and carried him away.
“This brat—one day, I will take his head with my own hands!”
Watching Xiao Ye sprint away, Liu Hai’s eyes shimmered with a strange light as he silently vowed vengeance.
Inside the car, the soundproofing was excellent. Qin Xue’er couldn’t hear Xiao Ye’s shouts, but seeing him running toward her, she instinctively opened the door and stepped onto the open ground.
She had witnessed his fight with Liu Hai just moments ago. Seeing Xiao Ye, worry clouded her voice.
“How’s your wound? Are you alright?”
But Xiao Ye didn’t answer. He wrapped his arms around her waist and ran in the opposite direction.
Five seconds later, the car exploded!
The deafening blast startled Qin Xue’er, the heatwave rushing over her face. Fortunately, Xiao Ye’s actions had been swift—they had already reached a safe distance. Had they been slower, he and Qin Xue’er would surely have perished in the flames.
The shockwave threw them to the ground; Xiao Ye shielded Qin Xue’er beneath him. When the blast faded, they cautiously lifted their heads.
“Are you alright?”
Xiao Ye slowed his breathing, checking on Qin Xue’er in his arms.
She shook her head, her mind blank, though a lingering fear gnawed at her heart. Just moments ago, she had been in the car; if not for their quick escape, she would have been reduced to ashes.
The phone rang—Lin Zhendong was calling.
“President Qin, why isn’t anyone at home? Where are you?”
Only now did she realize that everything had been a trap.
She briefly explained the situation to Lin Zhendong, hung up, and noticed Xiao Ye was still holding her tightly.
“Let me down first,” Qin Xue’er’s cheeks flushed crimson.
Xiao Ye laughed awkwardly, then gently released her. Thinking of Liu Hai, he quickly turned around to check.
But before him, not a shadow remained.
Damn it, they’d escaped again. Xiao Ye kicked a stone at his feet hard, sending it flying.
“Your wound—is it alright?”
Qin Xue’er looked at the blood stains on his torn clothes, concern in her eyes.
Xiao Ye smiled calmly; such things were nothing to him. He had endured injuries far worse than this.
After confirming they were both fine, Qin Xue’er called her company secretary. About twenty minutes later, a young man arrived.
His name was Lin Zhendong, recently hired as Qin Xue’er’s secretary.
“President Qin, are you alright?”
Seeing the two covered in dust, with the charred remains of the car behind them, Lin Zhendong was shocked and momentarily lost his composure.
“Don’t worry, get President Qin to the company first. I have something to handle and will be there soon.”
Xiao Ye treated his wound briefly and stepped forward to steady them.
Lin Zhendong nodded, but Qin Xue’er, still concerned, said,
“Shouldn’t we go to the hospital first to deal with these wounds? We don’t want any complications.”
No matter how she insisted, Xiao Ye refused.
“There’s no time. Get to the company quickly—don’t delay business. I’ll be back soon.”
Seeing she couldn’t persuade him, and with the appointed time near, Qin Xue’er said no more and got into the car.
Watching them drive away, Xiao Ye’s expression grew cold.
He opened his phone and dialed Chi Long.
“King Xiao, what are your orders?”
Chi Long’s voice came from the other end.
“I was ambushed—someone tried to assassinate me on the road.”
Xiao Ye spoke calmly.
“What? Someone dares stir trouble in Jianghai City—they must have a death wish!”
Chi Long sounded shaken and quickly apologized.
That could wait. The most urgent thing was to find out who was behind it.
Chi Long answered, then hung up.
Three minutes later, Xiao Ye’s phone rang again.
“King Xiao, we’ve found out—it was the Chu family from the Jianghai Business Alliance!”
Hearing those familiar words, Xiao Ye’s face grew colder.
“Jianghai Business Alliance.”
He repeated the name several times, then said,
“Send me their address. I’ll clear the obstacles myself.”
The address was quickly sent to his phone. Xiao Ye hailed a taxi and headed straight for the Chu family’s company.
On the way, the driver kept glancing at Xiao Ye, clearly unsettled by his injuries, yet dared not ask.
“Hey, maybe we should… go to the hospital first for a bandage?”
The driver ventured hesitantly.
“No need. Just drive.”
Xiao Ye’s face remained expressionless, though anger simmered within him.
About twenty minutes later, the driver stopped in front of the Chu family’s tower.
After paying, Xiao Ye got out and walked directly into the company.
As he tried to enter, several burly security guards blocked his path.
“Who are you? Do you have an appointment?”
The security chief, seeing Xiao Ye injured and ragged, assumed he was a troublemaker and tried to drive him away.
But Xiao Ye, in a foul mood, would brook no provocation.
Before the chief could finish speaking, Xiao Ye raised his hand and slapped him, sending him flying.
With a loud crash, the guard’s body arced through the air and landed heavily on the ground.
He didn’t even have time to cry out—he lay there unconscious.
The remaining guards stared in disbelief, eyes wide, gasping in shock.
Each was stunned by the murderous aura emanating from Xiao Ye, frozen on the spot.
The crowd nearby began to scream.
Under Xiao Ye’s icy gaze, the security guards instinctively stepped aside, opening a path.
With a cold snort, Xiao Ye strode into the Chu family’s tower.
As he rushed through the lobby, many who had witnessed his brutality scattered in panic.
They could not fathom where this man, fierce as a god of slaughter, had come from.
