Chapter 106: Summoning Xue Gui
"Hello, my name is Xiao Ye. Old Master Liu fainted earlier, and I was the one who brought him back."
"A person like you can save lives?"
As soon as Xiao Ye spoke, Liu Xia pulled a long face, her tone dripping with disdain.
"What happened earlier was just an accident. I never expected—your upbringing seems quite strict, yet your attire?" Xiao Ye suppressed his rising temper and spoke to Liu Xia patiently.
It seemed that Old Master Liu must have had some connection with his family in the past. Since he was an old acquaintance, he felt he should remain polite.
"Let me be honest. I've seen plenty of people like you. Tell me, how much money do you want to just leave?" Liu Xia’s eyes were filled with contempt as she looked at Xiao Ye’s outfit, her gaze brimming with utter condescension.
Xiao Ye simply didn't have the time to go to shopping malls, which was why he always wore plain, casual clothes. However, that was no reason for Liu Xia to look down on him. This remark thoroughly infuriated him.
Just then, Old Master Liu returned from the kitchen carrying a kettle. Xiao Ye stood up.
"Old Master Liu, it seems I am not very welcome here. Perhaps we can choose another place to meet next time. I shall take my leave."
"Wait!" Old Master Liu quickly grabbed Xiao Ye, then looked at Liu Xia with a stern expression. "What are you standing there for? Apologize at once!"
Although Old Master Liu usually doted on Liu Xia, he would not indulge her when it mattered most. Seeing her grandfather’s expression, Liu Xia knew she had overstepped, but she still muttered with extreme reluctance, "I'm sorry!"
"I am the one who should be apologizing. Old Master Liu, I truly cannot do what you're asking." Beyond the fact that he thoroughly disliked Liu Xia, the most important thing was that saving the old man earlier had been pure luck. If he were tasked with treating someone, he had absolutely no confidence in his ability.
"Are you really going to make this old bag of bones kneel before you agree?" Before Xiao Ye could react, the old man’s legs gave way, and he prepared to kneel.
Xiao Ye frowned, but his body moved faster than his thoughts, and he immediately caught the man. Having an elder kneel to him was a burden he could not bear. Xiao Ye sighed; he had never imagined that getting involved with his family’s past would be so unpleasant.
He had never been so desperate to leave a place. Yet, there was something he needed to learn from Old Master Liu.
Seeing the hesitation on Xiao Ye’s face, a faint, imperceptible smile appeared at the corner of Old Master Liu’s mouth.
"I will prepare to start, but I'll say this upfront: if it doesn't work out, you must let me leave." Xiao Ye scratched his head and added.
"That goes without saying. Tell me, what do you need? I will cooperate fully!" Old Master Liu smiled and waved his hand. Two people appeared from nowhere and stood respectfully behind him.
"I don't need anything, but I need to make a phone call first." With that, Xiao Ye walked into the shadows of the room and took out his phone. He naturally needed to call Xue Gui to come over.
The phone rang a few times before it was answered.
"King Xiao, what is it? What orders do you have for me?" Xue Gui’s voice came through, still carrying a hint of playfulness as he spoke to Xiao Ye.
"How is the investigation into the medicine going?" Xiao Ye asked, referring to the treatment for Qin Xueer’s facial scars.
"I have been tracking it, of course, but since that last encounter, I haven't found any valuable leads." Since their clash with that organization, clues regarding the medicinal herbs had vanished. He had been working hard, but had come up empty-handed.
Xiao Ye sighed. He understood that such things could not be rushed. "Never mind, put that aside for now. I need you to come to Jianghai City immediately."
Xue Gui was puzzled and asked a few questions, but Xiao Ye offered no explanation. Left with no choice, he agreed to follow Xiao Ye’s instructions and head to Jianghai City.
After giving his orders to the Red Dragon, Xiao Ye called Qin Xueer.
"Xiao Ye, how is the old gentleman? He didn't give you any trouble, did he?" Qin Xueer’s voice on the other end was full of concern; she seemed to be sweating for him. It was natural to worry; in this day and age, who would dare to help an unknown elderly person on the street? She was afraid that Old Master Liu might try to take advantage of the situation and latch onto Xiao Ye.
"No, although the situation is complicated, it has nothing to do with me." Xiao Ye rubbed his temples. He would have preferred if the situation were as simple as what Qin Xueer had described. The reality was much more complex, but he chose not to tell her.
"If there’s a problem, remember to call me."
"I understand. I am very safe right now, so don't worry." Xiao Ye’s voice was calm, conveying a sense of warmth to Qin Xueer through the phone.
After hanging up, Xiao Ye returned to the room. Old Master Liu had poured him a cup of tea, and Liu Xia sat on the sofa opposite him, staring at him with a hostile gaze, as if to assert her authority over him. Xiao Ye couldn't be bothered to engage with her and turned to talk to Old Master Liu instead.
"Old Master Liu, you mentioned that you were an old acquaintance of my family. Could you tell me what really happened back then?" This was what Xiao Ye was most curious about. According to his investigations, the downfall of the Xiao family was definitely not that simple.
"Come to think of it, I had many business dealings with your family back then. I was shocked and stunned when I heard the news, but now that things have reached this point... some things are better left in the past." Old Master Liu shook his head, his face full of regret, his tone laden with helplessness.
But at that moment, Xiao Ye spoke up. "They cannot be left in the past. My family paid the price of their entire existence to buy me a chance at life. I absolutely cannot let this go."
Though his tone was flat, the light flickering in his eyes was burning fiercely. Watching him, Old Master Liu was stunned. Then, his expression shifted, and he asked in a rather mysterious tone, "Could it be that you want everyone involved to be buried along with them?"
Their eyes locked. Xiao Ye’s gaze was filled with absolute resolve. He said nothing, but Old Master Liu understood the answer he sought in those eyes. Old Master Liu nodded slowly, sitting on the sofa in silence, though something seemed to be burning in his own eyes as well.
The rest of the conversation turned to trivial matters. Xiao Ye still held back, not revealing his true identity.
