Chapter 97: The Mysterious Couple

At 7:45 p.m., a dark green off-road vehicle suddenly drove into the police station compound. The guard on duty at the gate barely had a chance to stop it. The car made a sharp sideways stop right in front of the police station’s office building.

Three guards quickly ran over to the sudden intruder, frowning deeply, ready to give the two unannounced visitors a proper lesson.

“Hey, hey, why the hostility? We’re all on the same side,” said a young man as he jumped out of the driver’s seat. Standing about 1.85 meters tall with a robust build, his tight dark green T-shirt accentuated his broad chest muscles clearly. He wore a faint smile, utterly unconcerned about his abrupt arrival.

From the passenger seat stepped down a young, beautiful woman. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, her eyes as clear as autumn waters. She wore simple yet elegant attire, her upright posture and striking figure rivaling that of top models. Her noble and graceful aura left the three guards at a loss for words.

“Who are you two?” The elder guard sensed from their demeanor that these young individuals were no troublemakers. Judging by their appearance, they were not ordinary people.

“We’re here to see Director Chen. Where is he?” The young woman spoke frankly, ignoring the question.

The guard hesitated. “You can see Director Chen, but you must register first. ID cards? Also, tell me who you are and which department you represent. This is a police station—not your backyard. Not just anyone can come in without permission.”

The young man smiled faintly. “Looks like your boss really knows how to keep things tight-lipped, huh…”

“You have no right to ask who we are,” the young woman said sternly. “Which floor is Director Chen’s office on?”

“Miss, don’t be so aggressive!” The guards were no ordinary security personnel. “If you don’t cooperate, don’t blame us for being rude.”

The young man quickly waved his hand to calm the situation. “No, no, please don’t use force—we’re guests.”

“Guests also need to register! Besides the Party Secretary, you’re the first to enter without slowing down or greeting anyone!” The guard scowled, clearly ready for a standoff.

The woman’s expression turned cold. They were really rigid here. Some confidential matters could not be casually disclosed.

Helpless, the young man took out his phone and dialed. “Director Chen, you should have been notified about our arrival at the Hedong City Police Station, right?”

……

Nearly 8 p.m., and Director Chen Wei had still not left the station. After reporting the situation regarding the Crimson Scorpion in Hedong City, he had received clear instructions: since the enemy was extremely vicious, do not act rashly. Two agents would arrive tonight to assist, and he was to receive them and provide updates.

Chen Wei was anxious but forced himself to remain calm and wait.

Suddenly, his phone rang. The number was hidden, causing him to frown before answering. “Who is this?”

Many scam calls came from hidden numbers. Chen Wei wanted to see who dared to deceive the head of the police station.

“Director Chen, you should have been notified about our arrival at the Hedong City Police Station, right?” The voice on the line was the young man from downstairs, though Chen Wei did not yet know it.

Relieved, Chen Wei said, “I didn’t know you were already downstairs. I’ll send someone out immediately to receive you.”

“We’re right outside your station, but the guards are too strict, and we can’t get in,” the young man said lightly. “If your rules require registration at the gate, well, sorry—we have our own rules…”

Chen Wei instantly understood his intent and went downstairs personally.

The three guards at the gate never expected Director Chen himself to come out. These two really were distinguished guests—Chen rarely personally received anyone except officials of ministerial rank or above.

“Sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn’t tell the men downstairs because…” Chen smiled, defending his staff without fully explaining. The visitors understood he was protecting confidentiality.

The young man smiled faintly. “I get it. Shall we go upstairs to talk?”

“As long as you understand,” Chen replied with a light smile, signaling the three guards to step aside. He then glanced curiously at the young woman.

The instructions said two people were sent to secretly apprehend the S-level wanted criminal, Crimson Scorpion. Yet Chen could not understand why one of them was a woman. The young man looked strong and capable, but a woman…

The young man seemed to read Chen’s thoughts. “Director Chen, you don’t trust the arrangements from above?”

Chen was momentarily stunned, then embarrassed. “No, not at all. I just thought… well, never mind. Please, follow me upstairs.”

The pair—a man and a woman—followed Chen up. Doubts lingered in Chen’s mind. He knew well how vicious Crimson Scorpion was, and he could not fathom why the authorities would send a woman on such a mission.

As head of the Hedong City Police Station, he felt uneasy. If anything happened to the agents within his jurisdiction, it would be a serious problem.

Inside the director’s office, Chen closed and curtained the windows, then hospitably poured tea for the two guests. He knew the agents sent from above were no ordinary people. Though he didn’t know their origin, their designation as a secret unit implied they were at least of major rank.

“Director Chen, no need for formalities,” the young man interrupted as Chen busied himself. “We’re not here for tea but to obtain useful intelligence from you.”

Chen nodded and sat down. “I will tell you everything I know… But may I ask your names?”

The young man smiled lightly. “Call me Azure Dragon, and her Silver Dragon.”

Chen was taken aback. Secret organizations used code names even for themselves. “Azure Dragon and Silver Dragon… While I don’t know your full capabilities, trust me, Crimson Scorpion is no ordinary foe.”

“You’ve probably never faced him directly. How can you know his strength?” Silver Dragon’s ponytail swayed as she spoke casually. “If I were Crimson Scorpion, I’d never let any police officer face me head-on.”

Chen nodded. “I’ve never confronted him directly, but I’m certain he’s no common criminal.”

The young man sipped tea, listening intently.

“Perhaps you won’t believe me, but in the Wenhui District of Hedong City, there is a female police officer who has repeatedly achieved remarkable feats over the years,” Chen said. “A woman who single-handedly toppled two criminal gangs and even killed an A-level wanted criminal, Cang Ying Gong You.”

Hearing this, both Azure Dragon and Silver Dragon raised their heads, exchanging doubtful glances. A female officer capable of dismantling two gangs didn’t surprise them, but killing someone like Cang Ying—a mid-tier underground expert—was incredible.

Chen smiled softly. “Of course, I didn’t believe it myself, so I conducted some investigations.”

Azure Dragon asked, “Could she have backing from someone powerful?”

Chen did not deny it. “Though I have no proof, I’m sure she lacks the ability to do it alone. There must be a benefactor.”

This was indeed interesting. The two exchanged looks, surprised that such formidable talent was hidden in a seemingly small city.

“I once considered leveraging that person’s strength to take down Crimson Scorpion. I thought my female officer could do it with their help. Unfortunately, after all these days, I have no answers. I fear that person may not be a match for Crimson Scorpion,” Chen sighed. “So even without facing him directly, I remain certain he is a ruthless villain.”

Azure Dragon nodded. “Director Chen, that’s precisely the case. Thankfully, none of your officers confronted Crimson Scorpion directly.”

Silver Dragon frowned deeply, curious about what kind of expert was concealed in Hedong City. What was their intention? Or perhaps the mysterious figure hadn’t acted because they were allied with Crimson Scorpion?

She scrutinized every suspicious detail. “Director Chen, can you tell me where your female officer lives? I want to know who she interacts with regularly.”

“I looked into it. She doesn’t live alone. She resides at the most famous medicinal restaurant in Wenhui District, which is run by her older sister,” Chen replied. “But there’s nothing suspicious about the people there.”

Silver Dragon nodded but remained unconvinced. Truly suspicious individuals never reveal their true nature, especially if they are experts.

“Silver Dragon, don’t dwell on matters beyond the mission,” Azure Dragon whispered, noticing her thoughts.

Silver Dragon ignored him and looked away.

“As for Crimson Scorpion, I’m completely at a loss. I recently identified someone protecting him, but Crimson Scorpion killed that person immediately,” Chen said with a sigh. “Now there are no leads.”

“Director Chen, it’s late. We won’t keep you,” Azure Dragon stood. “Since this task is assigned to us, we hope your police force will not interfere further. I don’t want any innocents to die because of this.”

Chen frowned deeply. “Don’t you need our police support and cooperation?”

“You’d only complicate things,” Silver Dragon said bluntly, denying any need.

Azure Dragon smiled helplessly. “If we need help, I’ll contact you immediately. Thank you for your kindness, Director Chen. We’ll take our leave.”

“I’ll arrange accommodations for you two!” Chen hurried to offer, wanting to provide proper hospitality to these agents sent from above.

“No need. We can handle it ourselves,” the young man said as he and Silver Dragon turned to leave. Chen rushed after them but could not persuade them to stay.
