Chapter Sixty-Five: The Shenlong Fukang vs. the Mercedes S350

The black, gleaming Mercedes shot forward like a bolt of lightning in the night, disregarding the fifteen-centimeter-high curb as it scraped the undercarriage with a loud bang and sped off!

Jin Biao, after all, was a seasoned player in the underworld—flexible when needed, but decisive when the moment called for it. The key to survival was knowing when to run! As long as you weren't caught red-handed, everything was negotiable. With enough cash, even the darkest deed could be painted white.

Qin Wan’er drew her pistol and shouted angrily, “Stop!”

But threats like that meant nothing to Jin Biao. This was China, not America; even with a police badge, you couldn’t just open fire. Jin Biao ignored Qin Wan’er entirely, pressing the accelerator even harder.

If they didn’t give chase now, the chance would be lost forever. Xu Yun didn’t hesitate for a second—he dove straight into the discarded Shenlong Fukang, the one Qiangzi had already written off. Before anyone could react, the engine erupted with a tortured wail and the little car shot out after the Mercedes.

“Hey! Xu Yun! Wait for me!” Qin Wan’er ran after him for several steps, but Xu Yun showed no sign of stopping.

Qiangzi’s face was a mask of panic. “That thing’s a wreck, patched up who knows how many times! If Yun goes after him like that, the engine will probably blow before he’s halfway there.”

Lu Feng was stunned, then dashed to the car as he shouted, “What are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

Shan Hongning and Kong Zhong also sprang into action.

Without a second thought, Qin Wan’er climbed in after Lu Feng, her face etched with worry. “Go! Hurry!”

Lu Feng didn’t dare hesitate. Though he’d worked with the police before, the excitement never quite faded. He could hardly believe he was part of something so meaningful.

The rugged Wrangler, unbothered by any road conditions, roared westward in hot pursuit. The Land Rover and Q5 behind it were not to be outdone, falling in line as Qiangzi and Xiaofei piled into Kong Zhong’s vehicle to join the chase.

The chaos outside the medicinal restaurant just moments before had now settled into a silence so deep you could hear a pin drop.

“Is Dad really chasing a Mercedes in that junk car?” Guoguo slapped her chubby cheek with a sigh. “I give up on him...”

Ruan Qingshuang picked Guoguo up. “Why don’t we go upstairs and wait for Daddy and Wan’er to come back?”

“Huh?” Guoguo turned her head suspiciously. “Mom, did you just admit he’s my dad? Are you finally agreeing to marry him?”

“Are you itching for a spanking?” Ruan Qingshuang’s cheeks flushed. Had she let something slip just now...?

All this time, Qiu Yan hadn’t stepped outside. Suddenly, the little medicinal restaurant felt unsafe. The forces encroaching from all sides were growing, like the circumference of a circle—the larger it got, the wider the area it touched.

From a small business, the restaurant had become the epicenter of power in Hedong’s southern district. Even people from the east side were showing up...

That only made things more dangerous—Qiu Yan knew this well. If those sent by the Blue Ghost were led by Red Scorpion, he wouldn’t waste time with minor players like Wildcat. Only someone like Jin Biao, a true underworld heavyweight in Hedong, was worthy of being his eyes and ears.

But from Jin Biao’s reaction, Qiu Yan saw nothing suspicious. Perhaps he wasn’t the one Red Scorpion had chosen.

Jin Biao’s men, Liu Huazi and Xia Lei, seeing everyone else chasing after their boss, decided their best move was to slip away.

Just then, Qiu Yan threw open the door. After a storm of blows, Liu Huazi and his Jiangnan Dragons, along with Xia Lei’s Northeastern Tigers, were all knocked unconscious.

Although Qiu Yan had basically ruled out Jin Biao as Red Scorpion’s informant, she would rather be safe than sorry—better to kill a thousand by mistake than let one slip away. As long as Qin Wan’er rounded them all up, she would feel safer. Killing them might be more secure, but Qiu Yan wasn’t a bloodthirsty demon.

Having the police take these men away would suffice to eliminate the immediate threat.

...

Xu Yun floored the accelerator. The nearly totaled, four-speed Shenlong Fukang somehow clawed its way up to 130 kilometers per hour. The noises coming from the engine were anything but normal, but Xu Yun didn’t care—he had to catch that bastard Jin Biao before the car died.

Jin Biao’s Mercedes S350 was worth well over a million yuan; cruising at 130 was effortless for it. But this was the city—so many cars, so many people. Driving that fast was practically a death wish.

Jin Biao, ever the cautious miser, prized his life and his car above all. So, despite the Mercedes’ power, he was soon caught by the rampaging Shenlong Fukang. As the battered Fukang, one headlight out and both hazard lights flashing, appeared in his rearview mirror, Jin Biao tensed, no longer daring to relax.

Just as a green light came on, Jin Biao veered left, heading straight for the expressway to Tuoshan District.

Xu Yun was right on his tail, executing a beautiful drift with the Fukang. The maneuver was stunning—if Hollywood’s Justin Lin had seen it, he’d have been signed up for Fast & Furious 8, 9, and 10 on the spot!

Once on the expressway, Jin Biao finally played to the Mercedes’ strengths, easily breaking 130 kilometers per hour. He couldn’t care less about speed cameras or fines now—escape was all that mattered.

Xu Yun had the pedal to the floor. Suddenly, he downshifted at high speed. The exhaust spat a thick cloud of smoke. With another stomp on the gas and a swift upshift, the battered Fukang seemed to unleash its hidden power, surging forward with a roar!

Even a sports car, with far better performance, would risk destruction if driven like this. But Xu Yun didn’t care—the car was a wreck already. Using unorthodox moves, he forced the old Fukang up to 150 kilometers per hour!

Jin Biao had thought escape would be easy, but the Fukang chased him down, belching a cloud of white smoke. Before Jin Biao could react, Xu Yun’s Fukang was side by side with the Mercedes S350. Without hesitation, Xu Yun rammed into Jin Biao’s car!

Crash! Sparks flew as the two vehicles collided. Xu Yun fought to control the shuddering steering wheel, keeping the car steady.

Jin Biao, terrified, gripped the wheel with both hands, trying again to accelerate away.

Any experienced driver knows—even a luxury car, after being rammed and jolted, won’t accelerate like new. The response lags; the car loses some of its punch. It’s not a race car, after all.

Xu Yun saw Jin Biao trying to escape and rammed him again, without hesitation.

Crash!

Both cars swerved, but still barreled down the expressway at high speed.

Damn, Xu Yun thought. That Mercedes should have eight airbags, right? How come none of them deployed after those hits? This wasn’t some cheap domestic car—the safety systems shouldn’t fail.

Xu Yun’s plan was to trigger the airbags; once they deployed, Jin Biao would have no way to keep driving.

But fate had played a trick. Jin Biao, after a past drunk-driving crash where an airbag knocked him out cold, had all the safety bags in this Mercedes removed. He’d never imagined that decision would save him now—if the airbags had gone off, he’d have been stranded for sure.

The two speeding cars sent other vehicles scrambling for the slow lane; no one wanted to tangle with maniacs like these.

When their speed hit 160 kilometers per hour, Jin Biao dared not go any faster. He usually had a driver—his own skills were average at best, and now his heart pounded in panic. Not even the best windshield could calm his nerves.

With only a ten-kilometer-per-hour difference between the cars, Jin Biao couldn’t easily shake Xu Yun. The battered Fukang had given its all—another hard maneuver might wreck it for good. All Xu Yun could do was max out the speed and avoid falling behind.

Luckily, Jin Biao’s nerves weren’t up to the task. Several times, when he managed to pull ahead, he’d tap the brakes out of fear, letting Xu Yun catch up.

The chase stretched for thirty kilometers, carrying them from the boundaries of Wenhui District into Tuoshan District. One turn at the next intersection and they’d be inside Tuoshan.

Jin Biao’s Mercedes, its side nearly scraped raw, finally made it back to his home turf. Yet he couldn’t breathe easy, for the battered Fukang still clung to his tail.

Driven to desperation, Jin Biao ignored the heavy traffic and ran a red light with a hard left turn, nearly colliding with two oncoming cars—enough to make him break out in a cold sweat.

But this intersection was packed, and with five or six seconds left on the red, Xu Yun had no choice but to slam the brakes.

That single stop did it—the Fukang’s engine gave a thunderous bang and fell silent, as if a three-hundred-pound man had sat on his head and let out a silent but deadly fart, making Xu Yun’s seat vibrate.

Damn! The engine was dead. Xu Yun cursed and hurriedly turned the key. Chug-chug—nothing. Chug-chug—still nothing.

It was over. The car was finished.

Xu Yun looked up just in time to see Jin Biao’s black Mercedes disappearing from sight. After chasing him this far, letting him get away now would make it all for nothing! Without hesitation, Xu Yun kicked open the car door and sprinted to the sidewalk, startling a dozen cyclists riding by.

“Miss, let me borrow your bike.” Xu Yun didn’t care if she agreed or not; he snatched the bike from a young woman. “Come find me in Wenhui District—I’ll return it!”

“Hey! You thief! Stop! That’s robbery!”

Ignoring her angry shout, Xu Yun pedaled away at full speed. His actions infuriated the rest of the cycling group; everyone instantly perked up.

“After him!” the captain ordered, and a dozen cyclists charged through the green light in pursuit.

But the mighty, surging peloton only added a splash of urban energy to the scene. No matter how hard they pedaled, they could only watch helplessly as their teammate’s bike disappeared into the distance.
