Chapter 75: The Master of Beauty
Yin Shanshan was sent back to the camp for a check-up. Her manager stayed with her alone to discuss what had just happened.
“This is outrageous! The cameras definitely caught everything. Let's upload it online and see how Su Wan’ning can redeem herself this time!”
Her manager was indignant, and Yin Shanshan’s face was even gloomier.
“We’ll do as you say,” she replied.
As she spoke, Yin Shanshan opened her phone and saw an unread email in her inbox. The moment she glanced at it, her expression changed dramatically, and she shouted, “Wait—”
Her manager, who had just reached the door, was startled and turned back abruptly. “What is it?”
Yin Shanshan took a deep breath to steady herself and handed over her phone.
On the screen was an email, detailing numerous screenshots of chat logs. Most of these exchanges were pictures—photos of the bad reviews left under the grapes Su Wan’ning sold last time. Judging by the timestamps, these photos were taken before the negative reviews were posted. Even more conspicuous, the email had highlighted in red circles the identical backgrounds in the images.
Aside from this string of evidence, the email contained not a single superfluous word—just a signature, three characters long, glaring out at them.
“Su Wan’ning…”
Yin Shanshan muttered the name bitterly, wishing she could devour Su Wan’ning alive.
“What do we do now? What does she mean by this?” The manager was clearly more flustered than Yin Shanshan.
“She didn’t say anything in the email. It can only be a threat—she predicted we’d make a move now.”
Yin Shanshan stared at herself in the mirror. She had always been the poised queen before anyone else, but only with Su Wan’ning did she end up disgraced time and again.
“So we’re just supposed to swallow this humiliation?”
“What else can we do!” Yin Shanshan’s voice rose in a furious outburst. The manager dared not say another word and slipped out quietly.
On the other side, Su Wan’ning tucked her phone away, a triumphant smile on her lips as she hummed a cheerful tune.
“Mama, what are you singing?” her daughter asked.
Su Wan’ning looked down at her with a beaming smile and sang aloud, “We, the common folk, are truly happy today!”
[Indeed, mother and daughter are cut from the same cloth.]
[I’m suddenly reminded of that famous river—help, I can’t!]
After lunch, the production team took the children and their mothers to a special beauty parlor on the Mongolian grasslands.
“There are all sorts of beauty products here. This afternoon, the children will give their mothers a beauty treatment, helping their moms keep the traces of time at bay with their own hands!”
In the center of the yurt stood four neatly arranged beauty beds, and next to them, shelves filled with various bottles, jars, and beauty tools.
The director’s creativity was as tacky as ever, Su Wan’ning thought privately, though she said nothing aloud. She walked to a bed in the corner and lay down.
“Nian Nian, go pick out a few face masks for mama.”
“Okay!” The little one ran off cheerfully to a nearby cabinet. The other children also got busy, each grabbing a small basket and collecting products they couldn't quite decipher.
The children laughed and gave each other advice, but in truth, the labels were in English, German, even Korean and Japanese. The children didn’t understand any of it and just grabbed things at random.
“Look what I found!” Mingming announced, having discovered a few transparent bowls in a cabinet corner. Each child got one, and they started mixing all sorts of products together with the stirring rods, as if concocting a potion.
[Are the kids really giving their moms a beauty treatment, or are they cooking lunch?]
[I hope no one ends up with ruined skin.]
[I’m so envious! I see lots of high-end beauty brands—those are expensive!]
It was a rare occasion for a beauty treatment, especially after days of travel and labor. The four women lay on the beds, eyes closed, enjoying the rest.
Mingming, excited by this new task, poured everything into a bowl and approached Feng Rui, smearing the mixture on her face with the stirring rod as if applying mud.
Feng Rui felt uneasy. “Mingming, what are you putting on me?”
“A fox spirit mask!” Mingming replied without hesitation, her innocence making Feng Rui’s face darken.
“What did you say?”
“What’s wrong? My grandma always says fox spirits are beautiful!”
Feng Rui could only swallow her complaints—after all, the old lady at home was not to be crossed.
Soon, all four women had face masks applied, but when Feng Rui looked in the mirror, she realized something was wrong. The others had white or pink mixtures on their faces, but hers was dark and ashen, like real mud.
“What on earth is this?” Feng Rui ignored Mingming’s protests, went to wash her face, and when she looked in the mirror, she couldn’t help but scream.
“Ah! Why am I so dark?”
The camera zoomed in: Mingming had used an entire bottle of tanning serum on Feng Rui. Her complexion now rivaled that of a refugee from Africa.
Feng Rui called her husband in tears to complain.
After hearing the story, Boss Dai tried to comfort her, “Kids don’t know any better. If you can tan, you can lighten! I’ll find you the best beautician!”
“What do you know? Whitening is hard!” wailed Feng Rui, who had once resorted to whitening injections.
[This is hilarious—a little black girl!]
[“Feng Rui, the African refugee.”]
[You can tell Mingming knows what she’s doing.]
While Feng Rui became the butt of online jokes, Su Wan’ning simply found her noisy and got up to select a few bottles from the cabinet.
“Here, apply this. Wash it off after twenty minutes.”
She handed over a bowl of white mask.
Feng Rui hesitated, “What is it?”
“A whitening mask. If you don’t trust me, then forget it.”
Su Wan’ning set the bowl aside and lay back down. Feng Rui gritted her teeth—things couldn’t get any worse, so she might as well give it a try.
Twenty minutes later, with trepidation, Feng Rui washed it off and was astonished to see her own reflection: her skin was truly lighter again.
“I’m fair again! I really am!”
The others turned to stare. Yin Shanshan’s eyes widened in surprise. “What happened?”
She glanced at Su Wan’ning, then, swallowing her pride for the sake of beauty, softened her tone. “What did you give her? It worked so well!”
Su Wan’ning looked at her, and seeing the curiosity on everyone’s faces, got up and addressed the viewers in the livestream, showing them the very product she’d used.
“She got tanned because of the tanning serum, but since it hadn’t been on long, it was only a temporary effect. A strong whitening product can easily restore her complexion.”
