Chapter 89: Why Is It You?
Hearing Gu Changrong say, “You’ve come at just the right time,” and then immediately pull Gu Ci away with him, Gu Jinling arched a brow.
“Assistant Shi is still outside. Have him drive you there.”
Gu Changrong did not refuse. Tugging Gu Ci along, he hurriedly got into the car waiting at the entrance.
In truth, Assistant Shi had already driven some distance away, but the moment he received Gu Jinling’s call, he promptly turned back.
At first, he had assumed something had happened at Gu Changrong’s hospital. But when he saw Gu Ci being ushered into the car as well, he asked with concern, “Is Miss Gu feeling unwell somewhere?”
“No, it’s a patient.”
Assistant Shi instantly understood.
Of course. If anything had happened to Gu Ci, his president would never have stayed behind.
So Assistant Shi asked no more.
Still, a trace of puzzlement lingered in his mind.
Why would trouble with one of Gu Changrong’s patients require Gu Ci to be brought along to the hospital too?
That... was rather strange indeed.
Gu Changrong then began explaining the situation to Gu Ci in great detail.
“The patient suffered a comminuted fracture of the hand. Somehow, she got hold of that special-effect drug. The extract inside underwent an uncontrolled mutation. Last night, pustules had already formed on her wrist. There’s intense itching, waves of pain, and a persistent low-grade fever.”
Assistant Shi had not expected that Gu Changrong was speaking to Gu Ci about all this. At once, he felt oddly flattered and threw his earlier question out of mind.
Unfortunately, he truly understood nothing of medicine, so all he could offer was, “That sounds pretty miserable.”
Gu Changrong glanced at him once more and nodded.
Gu Ci said, “The biological stability of the RTC-1 extract was insufficient to begin with. Once it encounters the human body, it can very easily produce a mutational reaction. Something like this is hardly surprising. Let’s go to the hospital first and see the exact situation.”
Assistant Shi was a little surprised. “So Miss Gu understands medicine too?”
At that, before Gu Ci could say anything, Gu Changrong spoke up with unmistakable pride. “My A-Ci is very skilled in medicine as well. Even problems I can’t solve, she can find a way around.”
Assistant Shi smiled, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Gu Ci might truly know some medicine, but this time, going to the hospital with Gu Changrong was probably just Gu Changrong taking the opportunity to teach her a few things.
What he had just said was... really far too exaggerated.
Lately, Assistant Shi had begun to notice that the entire Gu family seemed to view Gu Ci through an absurdly thick filter.
Perhaps not even this scientific, rigorously minded titan of medicine was an exception.
Before they even arrived at the hospital, Gu Changrong had already received the ward number by message.
When Gu Ci heard the room number, she paused very slightly, but did not think much of it.
That person should already have been discharged by now, right?
Saint Heart Hospital, Room 408.
Madam Bai was pacing anxiously back and forth through the room while Meng Yueling spoke in a tearful voice. “Mom, am I never going to get better? I feel so awful.”
It was visible to the naked eye that Meng Yueling’s wrist had swollen red.
It was covered in red blisters as well, a rather frightening sight.
Hearing her daughter speak like that, Madam Bai felt both distressed and frantic.
She hated that wretched woman who had duped her into buying the miracle drug last week.
And she hated herself as well, for having been so bewitched that, upon hearing the young master of the Xiao family had stood up again, she had assumed it was the effect of the drug.
Now it seemed that the young Xiao heir’s recovery had absolutely nothing to do with that miracle medicine.
Just then, Madam Bai received a message.
The instant she saw its contents, delight flooded her face. She quickly hurried to Meng Yueling’s side and comfortingly patted her shoulder.
“Yueling, bear with it just a little longer. Doctor Gu will be here very soon. You’re definitely going to get better.”
At the mention that Doctor Gu was about to arrive, a glimmer of hope appeared on Meng Yueling’s face as well.
“Really? Mom, once Doctor Gu comes, I’ll be able to recover?”
“Don’t worry, Yueling. Doctor Gu’s medical skill is so superb—he will definitely cure you.”
Hearing that Doctor Gu could heal her, Meng Yueling thought again of all the suffering she had endured these past few days.
Her gaze turned venomous, her teeth clenched. “Mom, have you found out who sold you that medicine that day?”
“And Gu Ci too! If it weren’t for her, I would never have broken my bone at all!”
“Mother remembers everything. That bitch and Gu Ci alike—I won’t let a single one of them off. But your most important task right now is to recover.”
Madam Bai soothed her by patting her hand, her tone gentle, though her eyes seemed steeped in poison. “Once you’re better, Mother will personally have those two bitches dragged here for you to vent your anger on.”
At the thought of what she would do to torment Gu Ci and that other woman afterward, a flash of savage satisfaction crossed Meng Yueling’s eyes.
Then, with reddened eyes, she asked, “Mom, Brother Xuduan still didn’t come today either?”
For a moment, Madam Bai looked troubled and could only coax her. “Yueling, Xuduan is just too busy with work, that’s why he hasn’t come to see you.”
Suspicion and grievance showed in Meng Yueling’s eyes. “Mom, you’re not lying to me, are you? If Brother Xuduan really cared about me, how could he not make time to see me? What’s so important about work? Could it be more important than I am?”
“Of course he cares about you. Didn’t he send you a gift a few days ago? That proves you’re still in his heart.”
“But...”
“That’s enough, Yueling. Don’t let your imagination run wild. The most important thing for you now is to heal. You wouldn’t want Xuduan to see you like this either, would you?”
“Well... all right then.” Only then did Meng Yueling brighten and begin to wheedle affectionately at Madam Bai. “Mom, I want that new dress from Xiang House. When the time comes and I wear it in front of Brother Xuduan, he’ll definitely be dazzled!”
“Yes, yes, whatever you want.”
Though she humored her daughter with such patience, a flicker of rage flashed through Madam Bai’s eyes.
The truth was, that rotten boy was utterly impervious to pressure. These days, he had not shown the slightest concern for her Yueling!
She had even called and demanded that he come see her daughter, and he had refused outright.
Even the gift had been chosen by her and then sent over in his name!
If not for the fact that her daughter genuinely liked him, how could she ever have allowed some upstart who had merely started his own business to be with her daughter?
But since the brat was so insensible, then he could hardly blame her for showing him a little severity.
At that moment, the door to the hospital room was knocked upon and then pushed open.
When they saw a middle-aged man walk in, both Madam Bai and Meng Yueling’s eyes lit up.
Though Madam Bai had the vague feeling that the man before her looked somewhat familiar, she did not dwell on it and immediately went forward eagerly.
“Is it Doctor Gu—”
Before she could finish speaking, she saw Gu Ci entering behind the middle-aged man.
In an instant, Madam Bai’s face darkened.
“Gu Ci? Why are you here?”
It was only then that Madam Bai abruptly realized that the man before her was probably not the Doctor Gu she had been waiting for either.
