Chapter 61: Speak—What Did You Do Last Night?
Su Wan’s voice was gentle. “Ah Ci, how does breakfast taste? Are you used to it?”
Gu Jin Yan, “???”
At this moment, he felt a chill sweep through his heart, leaving him cold to the bone.
Watching the three of them enjoying each other's company, Gu Jin Yan couldn't help but wonder if perhaps they were the real family, and he was merely an outsider picked up along the way.
During breakfast, the group sat together on the sofa, chatting. Suddenly, Gu Ci’s phone rang.
Gu Ci went to the balcony to take the call. Gu Jin Yan could no longer contain his curiosity and asked, “Wait… Mr. Gu, Mrs. Su, could you tell me how I suddenly ended up with a cousin?”
The moment his parents looked over, he instantly lost his nerve.
Gu Jin Yan’s presence seemed to shrink, and he stammered, “It’s just… I’ve never met her before…”
“Well, now you have, haven’t you?” Su Wan raised an eyebrow, sitting leisurely. “From now on, she’s your little sister. As her brother, you must take good care of her, do you hear me?”
Gu Jin Yan finally sensed something unusual in the air, his almond eyes confused as he looked at his parents.
Gu Chang Rong and Su Wan exchanged glances and decided to explain everything, lest their straightforward son go directly to Gu Ci for answers.
Once he understood what had happened with his cousin, Gu Jin Yan’s mind was in turmoil, his worldview shattered.
He looked at his mother. “So Gu Ci is really their biological daughter, but they…”
Gu Jin Yan couldn’t finish his sentence.
Thinking of his uncle and aunt’s personalities, he instantly imagined how Gu Ci must have drifted from place to place over the years, not living up to their expectations for a daughter.
And so, she had been…
Gu Ci had done nothing wrong. Because of their negligence, she wandered outside for more than ten years, and upon returning home, was treated like this.
Su Wan nodded, sneering. “Exactly.”
Gu Chang Rong sighed. “We told you all this so you wouldn’t reject Ah Ci. She’s not like your uncle’s family. She’s such a well-behaved girl…”
“Don’t worry. I’m a warm-hearted guy, there’s no way I’d bully a little girl,” Gu Jin Yan nodded. Whether Gu Ci was well-behaved or not, he wouldn’t say, but he agreed that she was different from his uncle’s family.
Having a sister like this move in didn’t seem such a bad thing.
Thinking of this, Gu Jin Yan remembered he should prepare a welcome gift for Gu Ci.
He instinctively picked up his phone and messaged his agent.
[If I want to give a gift, what do girls usually like?]
Meanwhile, on the balcony, Gu Ci answered the call and heard a loud, desperate voice, “Ancestor!!! Where did you go last night?”
Gu Ci quickly moved the receiver away from her ear. “What’s wrong?”
Lu Qinghuan’s voice was filled with anguish, tinged with a hint of desperation. “Come back quickly! The two little troublemakers at your place think you’ve left without saying goodbye again—they’ve been giving me grief all night!”
Gu Ci rubbed her nose. “Tell them I’ll be back soon.”
“Okay, come back early,” Lu Qinghuan’s tone finally calmed, restoring his soft, clear, almost childlike voice. “By the way, a package for you arrived last night. I left it in the living room.”
Gu Ci, “Alright, got it.”
Returning to the living room, Gu Ci told Su Wan she’d be heading out soon, which Su Wan found a pity.
She had wanted to take Gu Ci shopping, to buy things and redecorate her room, but it seemed today wouldn’t allow it.
Su Wan said, “Ah Ci, where are you going? Let your cousin drive you.”
“Okay, Mom,” Gu Ci was about to refuse, but saw Gu Jin Yan already stand up, slinging his arm around her shoulder in a brotherly gesture, guiding her out with easy familiarity. “Ah Ci, let’s go.”
Inside the elevator, Gu Jin Yan immediately released her shoulder.
He crossed his arms, squinting his almond eyes like a brother interrogating his mischievous sister. “Alright, tell me—what did you get up to last night?”
