VIP Volume Chapter 051: The Titan Anaconda
Ye Xiaoxuan frowned. They had just left the lakeshore, and it was still a long way to Fragrant Sand Island—how could something be coming toward them? Hao Six-Fingers’ Heavenly Listening could catch the faintest sounds within a radius of ten miles if he focused, and it filtered out the useful from the useless on its own. That meant, whatever was attacking now, it was definitely not the giant turtle! Little Green had already confirmed this, too. Whatever was approaching was much faster than before, using all four of its limbs, paddling desperately as if wishing to leap eight or ten miles in a single bound!
Incredibly, Hao Six-Fingers’ hearing had picked up on it even before Little Green sensed anything! Judging by Little Green’s reaction, it seemed deeply afraid of this unknown presence. Was it an enemy of Little Green’s, or had it come for the three men?
Hao Six-Fingers straightened up, shifting nervously to sit in the middle of the turtle shell. His voice trembled, “That thing is fast! It seems like a whole pack, but maybe not. It’s already caught up—no more than ten meters behind!”
Ye Dajun’s eyes widened. “Don’t tell me it’s those man-eating knives again?” Ye Xiaoxuan shook his head. “Impossible! Even the Red-Crested Knife King doesn’t dare approach me, much less its lesser kin. This is definitely not a man-eating knife!”
At that moment, Little Green was skimming across the lake like a speedboat, its four legs churning the water like propellers, leaving a long wake behind. It was moving at least thirty knots—about sixty miles per hour!
Hao Six-Fingers’ face was pale as death. Crouching on the turtle’s back, he forced a laugh. “Good thing we’re on such a sacred creature—it’s fast and nimble, that thing can’t catch us!”
Ye Xiaoxuan stroked the shell with both hands. “Little Green is terrified! That thing must be its mortal enemy! Big Brother, move closer in, don’t stay near the edge!”
In truth, the whole turtle’s back was just a bit over two meters wide; even standing in the center, you weren’t far from the water. But Ye Dajun obediently stepped inward.
The moment he moved, a white blur shot out from the water, soaring past Ye Dajun’s face. Luckily, Little Green veered aside, and Ye Xiaoxuan managed to grab Ye Dajun’s arm in time to keep him from falling in.
With a loud splash, the thing crashed back into the water, drenching all three men.
“What in the world was that?!” Hao Six-Fingers’ voice broke, shrill with panic, as he stared at the swirling water behind them.
No one could answer. The thing had flashed by too quickly to see.
A moment later, a tremendous crash sounded from the distant surface of the lake, as if some massive creature had plunged from the sky into the water!
Ye Dajun and Hao Six-Fingers couldn’t see a thing, but Ye Xiaoxuan saw everything clearly.
At the farthest edge of his vision, a towering column of water erupted skyward, then crashed down like an iceberg collapsing into the sea—an awe-inspiring sight!
Could it be the giant turtle ahead? Ye Xiaoxuan immediately dismissed the idea. If the giant turtle were near, Little Green wouldn’t be this afraid.
If it wasn’t the giant turtle, what else could send such a column of water skyward? Even the Red-Crested Knife King didn’t have that kind of power. Had a blue whale come from the Eastern Sea to Grand Immortal Lake?
Grand Immortal Lake connected to the Eastern Sea through the Min River, and to the inland through the Black River. The Fortune had also come to Grand Immortal Lake from the Black River, so was it possible a whale had entered through the Min River?
But why would a blue whale come here? Why attack the three of them? Or was it after Little Green alone?
Something flashed at the corner of his eye. Ye Xiaoxuan thought he was seeing things and lowered his head, peering intently at the water’s surface.
He suddenly realized something strange: the more he concentrated on a spot, the clearer his vision became. The black lake at night grew transparent before his eyes; he could even see the shrimp fry darting beneath the surface!
Beside him, Hao Six-Fingers cried out, “Dajun, look at Xiaoxuan’s eyes!”
Ye Dajun noticed it too—Ye Xiaoxuan’s pupils were glowing red in the darkness, a startling sight.
Ye Xiaoxuan waved his hand. “Don’t worry. It’s Red Eyes—I can see at night. Don’t ask too many questions. There’s something under the water!”
Neither of his companions were entirely unaccustomed to Ye Xiaoxuan’s strange abilities by now. As childhood friends and sworn brothers, while they weren’t blasé, they had learned to accept some of his oddities. Hearing his reassurance, they relaxed a little. Hao Six-Fingers peered into the murky water. “What is it? Is there more than one?”
Ye Xiaoxuan shook his head. “Just one. It’s a white shadow, very deep—I can’t see it clearly. But it’s big, at least three meters wide!”
Hao Six-Fingers shivered. “How long is it?” Ye Xiaoxuan replied, “Don’t know—I can’t see either end…”
He suddenly froze. The column of water from before—could that have been its head? If so, just how massive was this thing? Its body could easily stretch four or five miles!
And it definitely wasn’t a blue whale. The shape was more like the Red-Crested Knife King, but many times larger!
While the three were still reeling in fear, Little Green suddenly stopped swimming.
Ye Xiaoxuan could feel the turtle’s terror, so intense it bordered on despair, as if it realized escape was impossible and death was certain.
Hao Six-Fingers was about to urge it onward when, all at once, the water ahead erupted. A towering wave surged up, and then a head as large as a truck rose from the lake, bringing with it a tidal wave that sent Little Green skittering back several meters, its body shaking uncontrollably.
The three of them nearly tumbled from the turtle’s back, soaked to the skin, teeth chattering as they stared up at the monstrous creature looming before them, too stunned to make a sound.
It wasn’t a man-eating knife—its body was round, not the conical shape of the knives, and its nose was somewhat flattened at the front.
The creature’s body was as thick as three men embracing, and the part protruding from the lake was as tall as a ten-story building. Its enormous maw gaped open, and two fangs like flagpoles jutted from its lower jaw!
Hao Six-Fingers was so frightened he wet his pants, clutching Ye Dajun’s arm, teeth chattering, his whole body quaking as he stared at the monster. “It’s a water anaconda… a giant water anaconda… the legendary King Anaconda!”
All three were dumbstruck.
Encountering the King Anaconda was like shaking hands with a water ghost—inevitable doom, for no one had ever escaped the jaws of such a beast.
Little Green was paralyzed with terror, floating motionless on the lake. For a turtle of its ancient, colossal kind, it was prime prey for the King Anaconda—a true delicacy.
Of course, if Little Green managed to eat the anaconda, that would also be a tremendous boon, but given their sizes and strengths, Little Green was far more likely to end up as the meal.
Ye Dajun jerked free of Hao Six-Fingers’ grip, stood up on the turtle’s back, and with hands on his hips faced the King Anaconda, which towered above him like a ten-story building. “If I’m doomed anyway, I’d rather feed the fish than let this monster eat me!” With that, he bent his knees, ready to leap.
