Wen Yun’an had searched every place Wen Wan’er might have gone, yet he still could not find her.

The hospital was his last stop—and his last hope. He hurried through its corridors, scanning every possible corner with anxious eyes.

At last, in the hospital’s lounge, he spotted Wen Wan’er sitting on a bench.

She sat there quietly, as though lost in thought, seemingly cut off from the bustle around her.

Wen Yun’an strode toward her, his face filled with anxiety. “Wan’er, what are you doing here? Why didn’t you answer your phone? Do you have any idea how worried I was?”

Wen Wan’er raised her head and looked at him.

There was something different in her eyes.

The girl who had once been so fragile that she seemed liable to shatter at the slightest touch now appeared remarkably calm and resolute.

She stared at Wen Yun’an and said, word by word, “I missed Qiu Ya. I only wanted to see her. Why are you so worried, Brother?”

Seeing the carefree expression on her face, Wen Yun’an grew even more concerned.

He crossed the distance between them in a few quick strides and carefully studied her features, trying to read something from her expression.

“Do you know how frightened you made me by leaving without saying a word? Sister Li was frightened too. If something had happened to you, how would I have explained it to our parents?”

Under the dim yellow light, Wen Yun’an’s profile appeared exceptionally handsome.

There was a bleak, almost tragic beauty in his eyes, as though he had endured endless pain and anxiety.

Tiny beads of sweat glistened among his slightly curled strands of hair, betraying his tension and exhaustion.

Wen Wan’er merely lowered her head and gave a faint smile.

She said softly, “I’m not a child anymore. I can take care of myself. So many things have happened around me one after another lately that my spirits sank to rock bottom, but I’m all right now. A hospital is the place closest to heaven, and also the place closest to death. Sitting here in this hospital, my heart has become incredibly calm.”

As she spoke, the smile on Wen Wan’er’s face grew brighter.

That smile was like the warm sunlight of spring, dispelling the gloom in Wen Yun’an’s heart.

Wen Yun’an was astonished by how utterly different she seemed from her former self. He tried to discern a trace of something unusual beneath her feigned lightheartedness, but in the depths of her dark eyes, he saw only his own reflection.

Wen Yun’an let out a quiet sigh. As her brother, how could he fail to see through her forced smile?

He sat down beside her. “Wan’er, I know you’ve been through a great deal lately, and your feelings must be complicated. But you’re not alone.”

Wen Wan’er looked up. “Thank you, Brother. I know you’re only trying to protect me. I’m truly all right now.”

A few moans from patients and the footsteps of medical staff occasionally echoed through the hospital corridor.

Tap, tap, tap.

In the oppressive quiet, the crisp sound of leather shoes shattered the silence, drawing Wen Yun’an and Wen Wan’er’s gazes upward.

He Guangfeng entered the hospital wearing an impeccably tailored suit, both hands tucked into his pockets as he hummed a tune and walked with light, easy steps.

As his eyes swept around the corridor, he caught sight of Wen Yun’an and Wen Wan’er sitting on the bench. A brazen smile instantly spread across his face.

He walked straight toward them. “Master Wen, the great painter—I was right, wasn’t I? I told you your sister would definitely be at the hospital.”

His tone was full of mockery and provocation.

He deliberately pronounced the title “Master Wen, the great painter” in a sarcastic, insinuating manner, clearly trying to provoke him.

Wen Yun’an’s brows drew tightly together, and his expression darkened.

Wen Wan’er glanced at her brother, then turned to He Guangfeng. Her voice was perfectly calm. “Wen Yun’an is my brother. Our family matters are none of an outsider’s concern.”

He Guangfeng laughed again. Looking at Wen Wan’er, a playful glint flickered in his eyes.

“Wen Wan’er, I kindly reminded you to come and see Qiu Ya, but your brother called me to interrogate me about what I’d said to you. Tell me, haven’t I been wronged? Your brother has offended me twice already. First, he barged into my succession banquet and caused trouble in full view of everyone. Then he called to interrogate me—and even reported me to the police and had me arrested. I may not be the most important man in the world, but I do have a reputation to protect. Do you think the Wen family’s behavior is appropriate? Fortunately, the police cleared my name. Otherwise, I would certainly have demanded justice. If reporters had caught wind of this, what do you think they would have written?”

“Master Wen, the great painter, storms into a private banquet to provoke trouble?”

“The elegant and refined Master Wen is arrested by the police?”

He Guangfeng sneered as he spoke.

After hearing this, Wen Wan’er pressed her lips together and fixed He Guangfeng with a sharp, blazing stare.

She sensed the provocation and threat in his words, as well as the fury building inside Wen Yun’an.

At that moment, Wen Yun’an’s fists were clenched tightly, and his anger was on the verge of erupting.

Wen Wan’er quickly reached out and stopped him before he could charge forward.

“Brother did all that because he was worried about me.” Her voice was calm and firm. She looked at He Guangfeng with composure and confidence. “If he has offended you in any way, I apologize on his behalf.”

Wen Yun’an stared at his sister in disbelief.

He was shocked and confused by her obedient, almost humble attitude today, but he did not make another move.

“Hahahahaha! Is that so? And you still had the nerve to make such grand claims about personally sending me away. I wonder who will end up sending whom away. Hahahaha…”

He Guangfeng’s laughter was arrogant and triumphant, as though he had already won.

He turned and walked toward the intensive care unit, his back radiating both arrogance and ruthlessness.

After He Guangfeng left, Wen Yun’an looked at Wen Wan’er with concern once more.

“Why did you apologize?” he asked, baffled.

Wen Wan’er met her brother’s worried gaze. “It’s obvious that he came to our house without an invitation simply to provoke us. He deliberately created a misunderstanding, then pretended to be the good guy. But, Brother, we can’t let him control us.”

Wen Yun’an nodded. “You’re right. With a treacherous man like him, we can’t confront him head-on.”

“Exactly. We have to treat him the way he treats others.”

Wen Wan’er closed her eyes and murmured to herself, her hands clasped together.
