Young nobles from the Five Mausoleums rode east of the Golden Market, silver saddles on white horses, sweeping through the spring breeze. Chapter Ninety-One: Even the strongest dragon cannot overpower a local serpent (1)
When he returned to the internet cafe, Xia Churan had not yet gotten off work. Seeing him back, the girl puckered her lips in displeasure.
"Fang Yu, where have you been? I haven’t seen you all day."
"I went into the city. Why are you still not off work?" He glanced around.
Shen Moran was sitting at a computer with Zhao Bin, tugging him along as the two of them chatted about something.
Lu Zhen and Cheng Chen, on the other hand, were an uncommon sight together at one screen, the pair whispering excitedly as they studied a new game.
"Hmph, you must have gone to keep Qin Lu company," Xia Churan said, tossing aside the ledger in her hand in a huff.
"Well, I guess so. I went back to my old high school today, so I’ve only just returned." He nodded calmly.
Xia Churan had been about to get angry, but hearing that he had gone back to his alma mater, she paused in surprise.
"Huh? If I remember right, your home is pretty far from here. Why go all the way back there?"
"Mm, I just felt like going. I only went back to look around."
Xia Churan leaned on the counter with a dreamy look.
"Wow, you must have been really popular in high school. Oh right, you and Qin Lu were in the same class, weren’t you?"
He nodded without denying it.
"Yeah. It was graduation and all, so I went back to have a look."
"Hmph, I don’t believe you. You must have gone to reminisce about the youthful days you two shared." The girl stamped her foot in irritation.
He suddenly grew curious.
"Come to think of it, why have I never heard you mention your old school before?" he asked, looking at Xia Churan.
"Well? What’s there to say about me? I was always the campus belle, okay? The boys chasing me lined up from the cafeteria all the way to the school gate." Xia Churan tossed her long hair with pride.
"Yes, yes, yes. Miss Churan is the most popular of all." He curled his lip helplessly.
Just as Xia Churan was about to press him further, Fang Yu’s phone rang again. He picked it up and saw it was the fat guy calling. Frowning, he still pressed the answer button.
"What is it?"
"Hey, Fang Yu, um... could you do me a favor?" Baozi sounded a little guilty.
"Mm? Go on."
"Well, here’s the thing. A few days from now, can you come to my school? My dad gave me a car, but my driver’s license got suspended a while ago, so I can’t drive. Could you come over and drive for me? Yanzi wants to go out and have some fun."
Fang Yu rolled his eyes, thinking that by rights Baozi should not even get his license until after 2012, so he was surely just putting on airs again.
"Where did you get a car from?"
"My family, you know that. We’ve definitely got plenty of cars. You can come with Qin Lu too. I’ll cover all three meals. Don’t worry, it’s only for one day, and it won’t be tiring."
Baozi sounded quite certain.
He found it odd. By rights, Baozi should never have managed to get hold of a sedan in 2005, and his suspicion deepened.
"All right, that works. In two days I’m going to Songyu anyway, which is pretty close to your place. But I’m going with Cheng Chen and the others, so when I come over, it might not be just me."
Baozi hesitated for a few seconds, but still agreed.
"No problem. Do you think I, Baozi, can’t even afford the food for a few of you? Come on, bring as many as you want."
After considering it a moment, he still agreed.
"All right then. I’ll arrive the evening after tomorrow. I’ll come find you at your school and we can talk then." With that, Fang Yu ended the call.
When he told Cheng Chen and the others about it, Xia Churan hurriedly grabbed his arm.
"No way. I’m going too. I want to see your high school as well!"
"Stop making trouble. Don’t you have to work? If we all leave, who’s going to look after the internet cafe?"
"I don’t care. If you don’t take me, I’ll have Jin Hai go bother Qin Lu again!" The girl waved her phone triumphantly.
He was so exasperated he kept rolling his eyes. Jin Hai really was a nuisance. If Xia Churan hadn’t already put him firmly in his place, Fang Yu would have had no good way to deal with that human plaster.
"Fine, fine, I’ve no choice with you. Zhao Bin, Lu Zhen, then the two of you will have to work a bit harder."
"Don’t worry, Boss Fang. I’ll keep an eye on things with Zhao Bin!" Lu Zhen thumped his chest.
"Mm, Cheng Chen will probably bring Li Jing too. In that case, the fat guy’s wallet is going to take a big hit." He chuckled to himself.
"Fang Yu, I’m going too!" Shen Moran suddenly stood up.
"You too?" He looked at the young lady in surprise.
"What, am I not allowed to go?" Shen Moran flicked her hair with haughty elegance.
"Heh, of course you can go. You know my fat classmate?"
"Who said I was going to see that greasy fatso?" Shen Moran shot Zhao Bin a sideways glance without thinking.
"Ah, I see." Fang Yu found it rather amusing. Glancing at Zhao Bin’s sour expression, he still kept his mouth shut and did not press the matter further.
Two days later, the group set out in grand procession from the internet cafe. There were three cars in all, including Shen Moran’s pink Z4, and they drove together toward Songyu.
Even Zhao Bin was quite curious. The frail-looking young heiress turned out to be surprisingly skilled at driving. On the highway, she did not get left behind by Fang Yu and the others, and somehow endured the whole four-hour journey on her own.
The three girls did not follow him to the headquarters of Full Belly. They simply assumed Fang Yu was going there to expand his business. Shen Moran took the other two girls shopping in the city. After all, when girls go shopping, it is not necessarily to buy things. As for Zhao Bin and Cheng Chen, they could only serve as laborers.
At half past six in the evening, the three cars finally pulled up outside Baozi’s school. The fat guy, along with Hu Yan, had long been impatiently looking around. Seeing them arrive, he hurriedly stamped out his cigarette and came forward.
"Why did you take so long? Isn’t it four hours from your place? Was there traffic on the highway?"
"We took a detour through Songyu to handle something. Where’s the car?" He looked around.
Baozi, quite pleased with himself, fished out a key from his pocket and gave it a shake.
"Here. My family gave me a car to use for errands, so I can just drive it casually."
Fang Yu could tell at a glance that it was the key to an older Buick Regal. The car was fairly decent, with a 2.4-liter engine, the sort more often used for business.
"A Regal?" He took the key and examined it closely.
"Yeah, you know it. My dad used to drive it. Now they’re just letting me use it for the time being." Baozi tossed his greasy fringe with smug satisfaction.
"Hmph, it’s all Baozi’s fault my license got suspended. Otherwise I’d be riding in this car every day." Hu Yan said resentfully.
"Where is it?"
"There, parked by the roadside." Baozi pointed.
Only then did the others turn back and see that there really was a black older-model Buick Regal parked by the road. On the rear windshield, however, there still seemed to be traces of the character used in wedding decorations, making it look exactly like a car from a wedding company.
"All right then. We’ll stay and play here for two days. We won’t be sleeping near your school tonight either—the last hotel was crawling with mosquitoes!"
"Oh, oh, yes, that’s how it is. My dad’s taking this car back in a couple of days to lend it to someone else, so just drive it for two days." Baozi sounded a little guilty.
"Whatever. By the way, where are we having dinner? We’ve been driving all day, and I’m exhausted." He frowned and looked over the small restaurants around the school.
"Don’t worry, I’ve got it arranged. Come on, I’ll treat you to dry-pot chicken." Baozi waved grandly.
