Chapter 10: Your Mother Has Been Reported by Someone
Before dawn, the bulletin board at the Xin County Hospital was already packed with a dense crowd.
"My goodness, a public whistleblowing letter! It’s exposing Dr. Li from the obstetrics department. Look at this, the content is absolutely scandalous."
"It must be fake, right? Doctors are public servants; how could they possibly do something like this?"
"How do you know it's fake? What if it's true?"
"Exactly. I think what’s written here is quite detailed; it shouldn't be false. If it were a lie, the person who wrote it would face worse consequences than the accused if they were caught."
"Nonsense. This is a hospital. If doctors are like this, who would dare to seek medical treatment at Xin County Hospital ever again?"
"People only stop going once it’s exposed. Before it was brought to light, shouldn’t we have been going there just the same?"
"Move aside, move aside!"
The security guards, having consulted their superiors after seeing the letter, pushed into the crowd, reaching out to tear the notice down. However, there were people in the crowd who had been "suggestively coerced" by Dr. Li. Not wanting to miss such a once-in-a-lifetime chance for revenge, someone immediately blocked their path.
"What are you tearing down? Don't tell me you’re trying to destroy evidence!"
"Evidence? Does that mean everything written in this letter is true?"
"Move aside! Who are you, and why are you causing trouble?"
"My wife gave birth yesterday, and it was this Dr. Li who delivered the baby. Even while my wife was in the delivery room, Dr. Li came out halfway to demand—"
"My wife also gave birth yesterday. The content of this letter is absolutely true! Yesterday, I..."
"My wife too..."
"Oh my god, it seems the contents of the letter are true."
"Exactly. I didn't believe it at first, but I never expected this."
Several members of the crowd vividly recounted Dr. Li’s unethical behavior. This Dr. Li was none other than Li Yunxia, the mother-in-law of Ni Qingguo. To secure favors for her grandson, she had pulled strings at the hospital, and the facility had almost never charged her for her dialysis treatments.
In truth, most hospital staff had some leeway for such things, and if it were only that, it wouldn't have been a big deal; the money could simply be paid back later. But as an obstetrician, Li Yunxia was a seasoned expert at earning "black-hearted money"—so much so that it cannot be described in detail here, as it would never pass review. In a past life, when this scandal broke, it caused a massive uproar, yet in the end, she faced no consequences, which shocked everyone. Instead, it was the victims and those she had framed who suffered immensely because of her.
Even if Li Yunxia was heartless, Lin Wei was not someone who would bite without reason. The reason she struck so hard was that Li Yunxia had also played a part in the incident involving her younger brother.
The sensitivity of the media was beyond Lin Wei’s imagination. By the time the workday began, the contents of the letter had already spread through newspapers and television stations. Some had even received news of the chaos at the hospital. Without a moment’s delay, reporters and camera crews rushed to the scene.
Unfortunately, they were one step too late. The 24-hour duty police officers had already escorted Dr. Li to the local station as soon as the crowd started causing a stir.
Lacking hard evidence, Dr. Li remained calm. "I know the hospital is in chaos; I’ve heard bits and pieces. But I am being framed! I am truly innocent. If I were earning such dirty money, wouldn't I fear retribution?"
Li Yunxia continued indignantly, "You shouldn't be arresting me; you should be arresting those who are spreading rumors about me. And the person who wrote that whistleblowing letter must be arrested too! This is hindering my work, and there are several expectant mothers waiting for me to deliver their babies!"
She snapped, "Let me go immediately! If you delay the deliveries, can you take responsibility?"
The officer frowned. "Ms. Li, the matter hasn't been investigated yet, so we cannot let you leave. You don't need to worry about your work; the hospital will make arrangements. Our priority right now is to verify the contents of the letter. Otherwise, no one in the hospital would dare let you deliver their baby, would they?"
"It wasn't me, it really wasn't! This person is saying these things, but do they have proof? You cannot hold me against my will!"
*Thump.*
"Evidence! This is the proof of the dirty money Li Yunxia earned. The ledger contains the time, amount, and the recipient of every transaction. Officer, you must investigate this thoroughly!"
The police officer, who was feeling a headache coming on, felt as though a pillow had been handed to him while he was sleeping. "How do you have evidence of Li Yunxia’s illicit earnings?"
"I received a whistleblowing letter. It told me that not only was Li Yunxia earning dirty money, but she also planned to frame me and push all the blame onto me. The handwriting on the letter is not mine, and I didn't know the location of the ledger. I handed the letter to the Dean, who sent the security team to search, and after a thorough sweep, they found that cabinet and discovered this ledger."
"Everyone who can testify for me in this matter has come with me. The Dean is at the hospital dealing with the chaos, but you can take his statement later to prove my innocence."
"Officer, this person is simply too much! How could she do such a thing? I don't get along with her, but I wouldn't go to such lengths. In fact, she has offended almost everyone in the hospital. If not for her high position, who would even want to deal with her?"
"I’m not kicking someone when they’re down. You can pull anyone from the hospital and ask them, and you'll get the answer you're looking for. No one will lie at a time like this."
"Officer, we guarantee that everything we’re saying is true. My wife gave birth just yesterday, and in the middle of it, she ran out to find me..."
"Same with my family! Officer, what we’re saying is absolutely true."
"Quiet! Quiet!" The officer tried to soothe the crowd's emotions, his head throbbing. "Everyone, don't be anxious. One by one, please."
*Knock, knock, knock.*
"Siqi, Qingguo, are you home? Open the door, quickly!"
The couple, still sleeping in, rolled over and ignored the urgent knocking at the door, drifting back to sleep.
"Oh, Siqi, Qingguo, wake up! Your mother is in trouble!"
"Siqi, Siqi!"
The knocking was incessant. Ni Fang, who lived in the room near the entrance and could no longer stand the disturbance, got up and opened the door.
"Uncle Yan, what are you doing so early in the morning?"
Yan Kuan pushed past Ni Fang, rushed into the couple's room, and slapped each of them on the leg. "Still sleeping? Wake up! Your mother is in trouble!"
"Mom is in trouble?" Yan Siqi muttered in her sleep, but she quickly snapped to full consciousness. "What happened to Mom?"
She bolted upright in bed. "Dad, what’s wrong with Mom? Did the hospital families cause a riot?"
"No, someone wrote a whistleblowing letter exposing your mother. They posted everything she’s done on the hospital bulletin board. She was taken away by the police before her night shift even ended. What are we going to do?"
