Qin Fan had taken nine hundred thousand yuan, and there were still more than a hundred thousand left in his account. He could now be considered a millionaire.
He had once thought that having one or two hundred thousand yuan to his name would be enough for a lifetime. Yet now that he had a million in his hands, it somehow did not feel like very much.
…
When Qin Fan and his parents returned home, they saw someone squatting outside their door.
“Xiaofan, take a look. Is that Yao?” Qin Yong narrowed his eyes and pointed at the figure.
“She does look a little like her, but I haven’t seen Yao in many years. Dad, Mom, you take a look and see if it’s really her.”
Qin Fan had not been home in several years, and the girl had changed so much that he could barely recognize her.
Qin Yong hurried over. If that dark, grimy figure really was Yao, then something must have happened.
When he reached her, he saw that it really was Qin Yao.
She did not respond when he called her name several times, but he recognized her by her clothes.
“That child… She actually fell asleep outside.”
Qin Yong looked at her with pity and patted her shoulder.
“Yao!”
Qin Yao opened her eyes and slowly stood up.
“Uncle!”
She looked somewhat timid.
“Yao, you should have told us you were coming to our house!”
“I… Uncle…”
Qin Yao seemed to want to say something, but stopped herself.
Seeing this, Qin Fan walked over.
“Yao! It’s been a long time!”
“You’re Brother Fan!”
Looking at Qin Fan, who now stood six feet tall, Qin Yao’s voice became noticeably more confident.
“That’s right. I’m back to work.”
“I heard you’re about to take the college entrance examination, so I told your parents to bring you here. I can tutor you.”
“Thank you…”
“Yao, you’re family now. Don’t be so formal. You weren’t like this before.”
Qin Fan gently patted her head.
“That’s right! Yao, from now on, treat this place as your own home. We may not be wealthy, but you’re family to us—the little sister of Xiaofan.”
Li Ping understood what Qin Fan meant. She stepped forward, took Qin Yao’s hand, and spoke gently.
Gurgle…
A rumbling sound came from Qin Yao’s stomach.
She hurriedly covered it with both hands.
Qin Fan glanced at her, growing angry. What kind of parents were Qin Yuan and his wife? They had taken the girl in, yet they would not even give her enough to eat?

“Yao, I’ll cook something for you!”
Li Ping was not at all reserved and immediately pulled Qin Yao toward the house.
“Auntie, I… I’m not hungry. I’ll pass.”
Qin Yao hastily tried to explain.
How could Qin Fan not understand her? Back when he had been broke at university and could not afford food, his roommates had helped him in the same way. He knew all too well the embarrassment and guilt she was feeling.
“Dad, Mom, we haven’t eaten either. There’s a KFC in the county town, isn’t there? Let’s go there.”
Qin Fan turned and walked away.
“Uncle, Auntie, I’ll stay here and wait for you.”
Qin Yao took several steps back.
“Oh, come on, Yao. Your brother Fan gets paid for his work, and today happens to be payday. He’s treating us, so eat your fill. It’s rare for you to come here.”
Li Ping took Qin Yao by the hand and led her away.
Late that night.
Li Ping and Qin Yong were lying in bed.
“The Qin Yuan family are truly despicable. They got the entire inheritance, yet they treat Yao so cruelly.”
“Exactly. Your elder brother is really something.”
…
At the base.
“These people control all the supplies. Every day, they force us to go out and kill zombies before they’ll give us anything to eat. It’s the apocalypse—what right do they have to hoard the supplies and refuse to share them with us?”
The stock tycoon, Li Yi, who had previously led the raid on the supplies, glared angrily at Shen Hui and the others.
“That’s right, Boss Li. They keep all the white-flour steamed buns under their control. We aren’t very good at hunting zombies, so we go hungry every day, while they eat whatever they want.”
“And they even demand our energy cores. They’re shameless.”
A group of people gathered together, staring at the white-flour buns behind Shen Hui and swallowing hard.
“Boss Li, what are we supposed to do if we can’t eat our fill every day? The apocalypse isn’t over yet, and we’ll all starve to death.”
“Do you want to eat your fill? Do you want to take control of the supplies yourselves?”
“Of course! Once we have supplies, we can eat and drink our fill and remain wealthy even in the apocalypse!”
“These people from the Superpower Bureau are relying on their abilities to throw their weight around.”
“Boss Li, tell us what to do. We’ll listen to you.”
“You’ll all listen to me?”
Li Yi looked around at the crowd.
“Yes! We’ll listen to you. You always have the best ideas!”
“Good! They aren’t the only superpowered people in the world. I’ll contact others from the Superpower Bureau. Then we won’t have to worry about them refusing us supplies!”
Li Yi glared coldly at Shen Hui and clenched his fists.
…
“Captain, where are we going today?”
Shen Hui was already impatient. Staring at the two large bags of powdered milk, he was willing to go anywhere if it meant getting more.

“Shen Hui, don’t rush. We’ll decide where to go after daybreak.”
“This is bad!”
“This is bad!”
“Captain Dongfang, Brother Shen, something terrible has happened!”
Wang Ye hurriedly pounded on the door.
“What’s going on?”
“Wang Ye, this is the council chamber. Haven’t I told you that you’re not allowed to come here without permission?”
Shen Hui looked at him sternly.
“No, Brother Shen, something terrible has happened.”
“No matter how serious it is, you can’t behave like this!”
“Wait, Shen Hui. Let Wang Ye explain what happened.”
Dongfang Wan’er sensed that something was wrong.
“Captain Dongfang, that stock tycoon, Li Yi, has gathered a large number of people. They say that you force them to hunt zombies every day and give them only a tiny amount of food. Now they want to seek refuge with another Superpower Bureau. Some of them have already packed their things and are preparing to leave.”
“Leave? Li Yi?”
Dongfang Wan’er immediately remembered the man who had led the earlier raid on the steamed buns. Wasn’t that very same stock tycoon, Li Yi?
“This is madness. Taking all those people outside is no different from sending them to their deaths. They’re asking to die.”
Although the Superpower Bureau had abandoned the superpowered people, the people trapped here had not been abandoned.
Shen Hui prepared to go out and find them.
“Stop. Don’t go. If they want to leave, let them. That Li Yi plans to seek out other superpowered people, but there are only a few members of the Superpower Bureau in this area.”
Dongfang Wan’er was not worried in the slightest.
“But the people Li Yi is taking with him are living human beings. What if they run into zombies?”
Shen Hui frowned.
“Don’t worry. It’s broad daylight, and there won’t be any zombies in the area around us. Besides, they’re going to look for other superpowered people, aren’t they? What is there for us to worry about if they find someone with abilities?”
Dongfang Wan’er had already guessed which superpowered person Li Yi intended to find.
A cold smile touched her lips.
“Captain Dongfang, the people at the base haven’t been doing well lately.”
Wang Ye continued, but Shen Hui stopped him.
“Don’t say anything more. Who says they haven’t been doing well?”
Seeing the two men hesitate and exchange uneasy glances, Dongfang Wan’er felt that things were not as simple as they seemed.
“Wang Ye, is there something else?”
“Nothing, Captain. What could possibly be wrong with Wang Ye?”
“Enough! What exactly is going on? If you don’t tell me, you both know the consequences.”
Faced with Dongfang Wan’er’s imposing presence, the two men instantly lost the courage to resist.
