Chapter Two: Resolute Break of Engagement
Meng Shuyue ignored the villagers’ sympathetic or mocking remarks, feigning shock as the provocative scene before her made her body sway slightly. Then she stormed up to Song Shijing and raised her hand, delivering a heavy slap across his face.
The sharp crack of the slap echoed clearly.
The force was so strong that the delicate scholar Song Shijing spun around once in place before barely regaining his balance.
“Meng Shuyue, are you crazy? How dare you hit me!” Song Shijing clutched his swollen cheek, veins bulging on his forehead, utterly unaware that he still owed her an explanation for the current situation.
Meng Shuyue narrowed her eyes as she looked at him.
Of course—he was the eldest young master of the prestigious Song family, renowned throughout the city for his noble character.
His father worked at the embassy, his mother came from one of the most distinguished families, and his uncle was a commanding officer in the military whom no one dared cross.
Such a favored son had been pampered since childhood; who would dare offend him?
If not for the fact that Meng Shuyue’s grandfather once saved Song Shijing’s grandfather’s life, prompting the elders of both families to secretly arrange a marriage between the next generation, a country girl like her would never have had the chance to climb into this alliance.
She had visited the Song residence once as a child. The moment she saw this handsome young man gently tending to a small rabbit’s injured leg, her heart fluttered, and he filled her dreams.
So when her parents asked which son of the Song family she wished to be betrothed to, she chose Song Shijing without hesitation.
She followed her parents into the city, studying alongside him with the Song family’s support.
He silently accepted her company and even asked her to wait for him until he finished his studies.
When he finally returned, even though he was assigned to the countryside, he insisted on bringing his fiancée along.
Looking back now, he must have been eager to go to the countryside just to see this foster sister, now married, and bringing her along was merely to silence the Song family elders.
Since he had shown such devotion,
this time, she would let them be.
Seizing the moment, she would sever all ties with Song Shijing.
She would break off their engagement.
Meng Shuyue took a deep breath, forcefully pushed Song Shijing aside, and stormed into the treatment room.
Before anyone could react, she lifted the blanket covering Song Yanyan’s head.
Song Yanyan immediately screamed, her face flushed bright red, exposed to everyone, her eyes pleading toward Song Shijing standing at the door.
Song Shijing hurried over, his once gentle and refined demeanor completely shattered. He grabbed Meng Shuyue, shouting, “Meng Shuyue, you vicious woman, get out of here!”
Meng Shuyue sneered coldly—she would show him what vicious meant.
She shook off his grasp and slapped him hard across the face.
“Song Shijing, have you no shame? In broad daylight, foolI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
